Zod is a warlord from Krypton who was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone for committing numerous crimes against Kryptonians. When Krypton exploded, he was freed from the Phantom Zone and came to Earth, where he battled Superman on several occasions. He was eventually defeated and returned to the Phantom Zone.
In 2013, General Zod appeared as a recurring antagonist in the television series Supergirl, portrayed by British actor Michael Shannon.

History
The character of General Zod first appeared in Superman II, played by Terence Stamp. He was a powerful Kryptonian military leader who was banished to the Phantom Zone for his crimes. Years later, he and several other criminals were freed from the Phantom Zone by Lex Luthor, and they began wreaking havoc on Earth. Superman eventually defeated Zod and sent him back to the Phantom Zone.
In Man of Steel, Zod is once again played by Michael Shannon. He is a high-ranking military officer in Krypton’s army, and is tasked with leading the planet’s forces in their war against another race called the Travelers. However, Superman defeats them all and kills Zod himself in order to protect humanity.
General Zod is one of Superman’s most iconic enemies, and has been featured in many comics over the years. He is typically portrayed as a ruthless dictator who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. However, there have been some instances where he has been shown to be more sympathetic, such as when he was trying to save Krypton from destruction or when he was being controlled by Brainiac.
